Celebrating Small Businesses On Canada Day

It’s the Friday before Canada Day, and I’m chatting with Aditi about an important project that we completed over the month of June. It’s sunny outside, and my eyes keep wandering out the window. I think to myself, it’s been a gorgeous month.

“I’m so proud of you all,” Aditi says with enthusiasm. “I know the deadline was tight, but you got it done. And I’m very impressed with the quality of work.”

“Thank-you, Aditi,” I say with a smile. “I think we all enjoyed working on the project so much. I hope it came through in the final draft.”

“Oh, it did,” Aditi assures me.

“Wonderful,” I start. “On that note, I was hoping to give a few of our team members a surprise Monday off for their hard work. Canada Day is on a Tuesday this year, and it would be so nice to give them a four-day weekend.”

“Funny you ask,” Aditi responds, “because I was going to tell you that the whole office has been granted Monday off for a job well done! Also, there’s a special delivery on its way to you right now.”

“How generous!” I beam. “Thank-you very much.”

I hear a beep on the line, and the low buzz of voices. It’s Aditi’s administrator, telling her that her next meeting has arrived.

“Sorry, Rona, but I better get going. Thanks again for the hard work. Enjoy the long weekend!” Aditi says before ending our call.

I walk over to Brigid’s desk with a smile on my face. “Brigid,” I start, “I’d like to give you Monday off for all the overtime you put in this month.” She gives me a big thank-you and then, in typical Brigid fashion, dives right back into her work.

I go around the office giving everyone the good news, and the gratitude is overwhelming. I almost forget about the lunchtime delivery, but then Brigid knocks on my door.

“You’ve got to see this!” she says with excitement.

There is a huge package on Brigid’s desk. Chapman’s icecream, sandwiches from a local deli and mini hockey sticks. There’s a note, too:

“To my hard workers, thank-you for everything. You deserve a treat.”

Office Ice Cream for Canada Day

Before long, we’re all digging into the sandwiches and ice cream, talking about our plans for the long weekend.

“Who’s up for a game of hockey?” Andy asks as he grabs the bundle of mini sticks. He inspects them. “Made in Canada. Nice!”

“You know Aditi,” I say. “Always supporting Canadian businesses.”

“How appropriate for Canada Day!” Brigid responds.

Support Canadian Small Business on Canada Day 2014

“Well, we do it all year,” I remind her. “Most of our clients are small Canadian businesses. And look, Chapman’s icecream is made in Canada. These sandwiches are from a local shop.”

“Even our office supplies come from a Canadian supplier,” she interjects, “Office Plus!”

I smile at her, “You’re absolutely right. We have to support one another, and Aditi has always believed in that.”

We begin to gush about our favourite local businesses. Brigid recommends a local skincare company, and I tell her about my locally-made living room furniture.

“Alright, alright,” Andy says with mock impatience, “but who’s up for some hockey?”

Office Fuel: Time To Restock on Supplies

Today’s client meeting was so inspiring. I leave the conference room with a smile on my face and a growl in my stomach. I was so intrigued by all the new ideas floating around, I forgot to break for lunch. But my pen’s run out — a symptom of excited note-taking — so I decide to stop over at the supply closet on my way to the lunchroom.

Office Misadventures Refilling on Office Supplies

When I get there, I see Andy digging through a stack of empty boxes.

“Any pens left?” I ask him.

“Not that I can see,” he tells me, “but I’ll keep an eye out while I search for paper clips.”

I roll my eyes and let out a laugh. Andy is always building something out of paper clips. Last Secret Santa, it was a gag gift for me: an eyeglass chain. He knows that I’m always misplacing my glasses. My stomach growls again, so I tell Andy to let me know if he comes across anything, and I head to the lunchroom.

After lunch, I see Brigid pass my office door in a hurry. I hear her digging in the supply Empty Office Supplies Shelfcloset, then she shouts, “Does anyone have liquid paper? I just fudged an expense sheet that payroll needs in five minutes!”

I search through my top drawer and find an old, crusted bottle. “I’ve got one here, Brigid, but I’m not sure it’ll work,” I say as I shake the bottle skeptically.

“Anything will do!” she responds before speed-walking back to her desk with the dried-up bottle.

I open my notebook to continue with the client notes from earlier, but quickly remember my pen’s out of ink. I head over to Andy’s desk. “Did you find anything in the supply closet?” I ask him.

“Aside from printing supplies, everything is really low,” he says with a frown.

“Could you take a look at the Office Plus monthly flyer with Martha?” I ask him. “Order lots! I know she told me about a bulk deal on pens, Wite-out and paper a few days ago.”

“Will do,” he responds with a smile. “And hey, any chance I can order a few extra boxes of paper clips? You know, Secret Santa is just a few months away!”

We share a laugh as I pat him on the back, “Anything for your art, Andy.”

On the way back to my office, I can’t help but feel grateful for the employees I get to spend my days with. Then I remember my pen. I sit down and let out a sigh, thinking, “How will I finish my notes?”

Just then, Andy pops his head into my office. “A special delivery for Rona,” he says as he tosses me a box of pens. “Looks like Martha had a secret stash just for the occasion.”

I should have known. Even for something as simple as an empty pen, they always have my back.

Vacation Planning at the Office

As the weather starts to get warmer, business slows from its hectic pace to something a little calmer, which means it’s finally time to go on vacation!

Office Vacation Planning

I have been looking forward to this family trip to Florida for months now. But as the date creeps up, I can’t help feeling slightly overwhelmed by my ever-growing to-do list. It’s already Thursday afternoon and my flight leaves first thing Saturday morning.

The truth is, I can hardly even function at my desk these days. There are stacks of printed papers everywhere. We finished our first quarter reviews almost a month ago, and yet the reports are still scattered everywhere I look. I just haven’t had the chance to do any office spring cleaning.

It’s time to face the facts: I’m going to have to delegate if I want to get anything done on time.

I pick up the phone and dial the number for Brigid’s extension. She answers after the first ring. “Brigid speaking.”

“Hi Brigid, it’s Rona here, would you mind coming to my office?”

“Sure, be right there.” She hangs up and I immediately hear the click of her heels on the linoleum tiles in the hallway.

Seconds later, she peeks her head around my door. “You rang?” She says teasingly.

“Yes, thanks for coming so quickly. I’m wondering if you could help me out here.” I hold out my hand, palm facing up, and gesture towards the disaster of paperwork that has swallowed my desk. It’s as if I’m the host of a magic show; of course, the magical part would involve a disappearing act.

“I’m trying to tie up some loose ends before I leave for vacation, and my desk could use some serious organizing. Any chance you could work your magic?”

“No problem, boss.” She says with a smile. “I have just the solution, actually. Our order from the Office Plus flyer came in earlier this week with a fresh stock of recycled storage boxes, printable indexes and reversible file folders. Not only are the products totally affordable – they’re eco-friendly and perfect for office organization.”

Rona

I let out a sigh of relief. Suddenly the afternoon feels slightly more bearable. “You must be a wizard in disguise.” I tell her, gathering my laptop and a couple hours worth of work. “I’ll be in the board room if you need me for anything.”

“Shouldn’t take me long at all,” Brigid responds. “I just did some office spring cleaning yesterday, so I have the whole system down pat.”

I flash her a grateful smile.

“I just ask for one thing in return,” she continues. “Could you bring some of that southern sunshine back with you?”

I laugh. “Unfortunately, you’re the only one with the magical powers here!” I say with a wink. “But I’ll see what I can do.”
