De-Stressing at Your Desk


Stress can hit us at any time at work and leave our minds cluttered and frustrated. Here are a few short ways to relieve stress when it hits you at work:

De-Stress at the Office

Peel an orange

Focus on the motion of peeling the orange and how the rind feels between your fingertips. Try to peel the orange in an unbroken coil, it will refocus your mind on something simple and pleasurable and give you some time to relax.

Eat a banana

Bring a banana to work with you every day, they contain high levels of potassium that regulate blood pressure to relieve stress and improve energy and recovery.

Play dramatic music

Music with a strong drum beat and dramatic sequence can be equally as relieving as classical music. Hum along to one of your favorite songs to put you in a happier mood.

Massage your ears

Your ears contain many nerves, so learn the pressure points that help with stress and take some time to massage them.

Play paper ball

Scrunch up balls of discarded paper and toss them in to your trash can. Set a goal of getting 5 paper balls in the trash. You will instantly feel good about yourself when you reach your goal.

Find a ridiculous screen saver

Browse through some images to find a ridiculous one that will make you laugh.

Draw a messy picture

Put your pen on paper and don’t lift it for 60 seconds. Your drawing doesn’t have to make sense or look like anything, the point is to relieve your overwhelmed mind with a mindless activity.

Blank out

Stare at a point on the wall and allow yourself to blank out for a minute. A way of clearing a congested mind is to accept defeat and temporarily do absolutely nothing.

Wriggle

Wriggle your toes, fingers, nose, and legs to waken your body and promote circulation.

Some Things in Life Just Need to be Labeled


After spending the last two hours searching everywhere for a particular client file, I still come up empty-handed. A lump of frustration is swelling up inside of me. I sit back in my desk chair and let out an exasperated sigh.

Where in the world could it be?

I think back to my spring-cleaning efforts a couple of months ago, desperately trying to remember where I put things when I “re-organized.” Somehow it was easier to find documents when my office was in complete disarray.

As a last resort, I pick up the phone and dial Andy’s connection.

“Hello!” He answers, a bit too cheerily for my mood this morning.

“Hi Andy. Sorry to bother you. I’ve been looking high and low for the Centrix file and I can’t find it anywhere. Do you have any idea where it could be?”

“Hmm… Didn’t you file away last year’s clients in the staff filing cabinet?”

Aha! “Thank you!” I reply in excitement, hanging up the phone and hurrying out the door to the printing room where the staff filing cabinets are situated.

I find the file right away and head back to my desk, just as Andy meets me in the hallway clutching what appears to be a giant calculator to his chest.

I wave the client file in the air and smile, feeling both relieved and slightly embarrassed at my disorganization.

“Here’s the answer to your problems,” Andy says with a grin, as he follows me into the room.

He punches a bunch of keys on the device and a small piece of paper escapes out the side. He then hits another key to release the note and peels off the back before sticking it to my desk.

“Just so you don’t lose this, too.” He laughs, handing over the device.

“It’s the PT-D200 Label Printer from this month’s Office Plus Flyer.” He explains. “Being organized just got a lot easier.”

I try it out, printing off a label of my own. “And perhaps a lot more fun,” I respond with a chuckle.

As Andy turns to leave, I thank him with a friendly pat on the back. He walks out the doorway, completely clueless to the Andy’s shirt tag I stuck to him. “Just so you don’t lose your shirt!” I call out with a laugh.

1)     Prearrange a weekly appointment to clean

2)     Don’t make piles; set limits

3)     Your desktop is not a storage space (that’s what desk drawers are for)

4)     Get it off the floor

5)     Eliminate digital clutter (organize your inbox as you would your filing cabinet)

6)     Disinfect regularly

A survey by Adecco found that 75 per cent of workers believe people are most productive when their workspace is clean. Start spring off right – with a fresh desk and a renewed enthusiasm at work.
